Taking on washing your condenser coils is something you, as the DIYer, can certainly do. There are some practices to watch for but being prepared and knowing your limits will help you affordably get the job done.

Before you start any job, make sure you have the right tools available and any protective gear you might need. Keep your phone nearby in case you need to check a quick YouTube video or call for help.

Removing dirt from the coils:

You may use compressed air to remove dirt buildup. Make sure you point the air released at an angle. For better results, your released air should be at a 90-degree angle. This way, you’re not damaging the fins. Be sure to apply constant pressure with the airflow across the coils.

Washing more stubborn dirt build-up:

Use a brush to clean away and scrub away thicker dirt and debris. Use a very mild soap and spritz with water to remove the dirt. Avoid using hard-bristled brushes as they can damage the fins.

Avoid using industrial cleaners:

Sadly, most brands of commercial cleaners for DIYers can be detrimental to your HVAC unit’s drainage system. They are just too abrasive.

For heavy-duty cleaning of your condenser coil:

If there are years of buildup and debris, your system may need a professional to remove the coil and reattach the refrigerant channels for deep cleaning. We recommend giving us a call to schedule a cleaning of your HVAC system.

For the longevity of your HVAC unit, we recommend twice annually clean and check maintenance. This will avoid excessive build-up of dirt and debris on your condenser coil as well as check many other aspects of your unit to prolong your HVAC unit’s life.
