We’d like to declare this month as “No Drano November.” Actually, we urge you to avoid using Drano or similar “drain opening” products at any time of the year.

Because of advertising, Drano is a household name. Most people think of it as the first line of defense whenever they run into a clog.

Chemical drain “cleaners” do way more damage than good. They are expensive and dangerous.

They generate a good deal of heat while working on your clog. They will burn your eyes, skin, mucus membranes, and eat through your clothing. The chemical reaction can eat right through your PVC pipes. There’s even the potential for explosions if improperly used.

Many times, the clog is just too much for all those chemicals anyway and you end up calling in your friendly plumber to clear things up.

And if you’ve poured a bottle, or two, or more toxic chemicals down your drain, tragedy could result.

True Story…

A plumber friend of ours answered a call to clear his customer’s drains. They didn’t tell him they’d been pouring Drano down their pipes for days.

As he pulled the drain apart, some water spilled onto the floor. Not realizing there were harsh chemicals backed up in the drain, he continued his work under the sink. Laying on his back, working on the pipes, he soon began to feel a burning sensation. The Drano ate through his clothes and started eating through his skin!

He was rushed to the ER and spent weeks in the hospital. Because all other treatment options failed, his doctors eventually resorted to using medical maggots to clean out the wound. It was months before this gentleman could return to work.

We only share this story to help keep you, your family, your pets, and any unsuspecting plumbers safe.

There’s a better way.

We have a nontoxic solution. When you have a slow running or clogged pipe, follow these simple steps.

Mix½ cup of salt
With ½ cup of baking soda
Followed by a large pot of boiling water

Clog Clearing Recipe

If your clog isn’t cleared completely, wait 15-30 minutes and repeat. If your pipe is still clogged, you need a plumber. Give us a call.

Clogs happen. When they do, keep our recipe handy and carry on.

If your clog is bigger than the recipe can handle, be sure to give us a call. We’re happy to come out and fix any plumbing issue you have.

Wishing you a clogless holiday season
